Wölffer Estate Wine Stand (The Hamptons)

We found ourselves at the Wölffer Estate Wine Stand last spring on the way home from tasting some mediocre wines on eastern Long Island. And yes, most of the wines on Long Island are just that – mediocre. Unless you like sweet white wines and the occasional sweet red. But, the Wölffer Estate actually had some quality bottles that made me second-guess my natural inclination to bash LI wines.

Ahh, the Hamptons. New York’s well-heeled elite and the ones who want to be elite flock to the East End of Long Island the second Memorial Day Weekend strikes and the Great Eastern Migration happens beginning Thursday afternoon every summer weekend. While the North Fork’s “having a moment,” as they say, the southern fork – better known as the Hamptons, which is a collection of little towns sprawling for miles and miles – still enjoys a reputation of the place to be for the summer and to enjoy passable wines while people-watching to your heart’s content.

Anyway, Wolffer Estate Wine Stand. The estate itself was closed the day for a private event when we tried to visit so we contented ourselves with stopping at the Wine Stand on the way back from visiting Duck Walk Vineyards (which does have a very good, unconventional, blueberry port).

Always one to indulge in the bubbles, we ordered a bottle of Cool as Well Brut Sparkling Blanc de Blanc 2012. At only $35, it was a good buy and great quality – after all, the winery uses the méthode champenoise to make it, which means the bubbles are finer, softer and there’s a little TLC that goes into each bottle. Nice and dry, but still a little fruity, it was easy drinking on a warm May afternoon.

The inside shop – the stand – is full small but the staff is friendly; probably friendlier than one would expect in this neck of the woods. There are cheese and charcuterie plates available (which are delicious!) and wines are available by the glass or the bottle.

Sit outside with some friends – spend an hour… or an afternoon!

We weren’t able to tough it out long enough to enjoy the sunset concerts here, which happen every Friday and Saturday from May to October beginning at 5pm but it’s on the list of things to do for this year, for sure.

Although it’s mainly an outdoor space, dogs are not allowed unless they are service animals. I don’t love that policy, but the policy that I do love is that they do not allow bachelorette parties. So, there will be no buses of “woo girls” pulling up with a sea of pink and feathers and high heels or Tory Burch sandals tumbling out, yelling “Oh my GAWD! It’s time for some roséeeee!” here, ruining your buzz and complete relaxation. Hallelujah.
