Get Your Sleep On – Hilton Malta (St. Julian’s, Malta)

My husband and I spent the first leg of our honeymoon at the Hilton Malta, a luxury property situated in St. Julian’s Bay, Malta, and I could not be more pleased with our decision to stay here! We had looked at several other hotels on Malta and, after reading reviews, decided to cancel another reservation and book here instead. While the other property we were looking at was very nice, I think it’s the best decision we could have made.

Pro-Tip: Get a room in the newer part of the hotel and upgrade to Executive Level. It’s worth it.

Apart from a beautiful Executive King room in the new part of the hotel (Room #1158), what made our stay so special was the AMAZING staff and the special attention to helping to make our honeymoon so memorable and enjoyable.

The room was huge – shot from the bed looking toward the living area and the balcony.

Even prior to our arrival at the Hilton Malta, one outstanding employee was instrumental in helping us put together a (rough) itinerary and gave us some wonderful suggestions for what to see and do during our 6-night stay. I have a feeling she was behind all of the wonderful surprises we received during our stay – including a beautiful bottle of Heidsieck & Co Monopole Silver Top Brut champagne and chocolates, vouchers for free bottles of wine with dinner or delivered to the room, decorating the bed with gilded rose petals and flowers, and delicious cookies delivered to the room one afternoon.

Cheers to us!

Upon our arrival, another outstanding staff member, Alastair, greeted us at the desk and gave us a great summary of the property, its amenities, and offered us a welcome drink. His warm, welcoming demeanor was much appreciated as we were exhausted still from jet lag! We forgot a few items at home (shaving kits for example) and he had them sent up to the room for us immediately.

The pool is lovely and, although there were several weddings at night during our stay, I don’t think we had any issues with anything being “unavailable” to hotel guests as a result. Not all pools were open, but we were very happy that two were open, given that we stayed from October 15th to 20th which was late in the season even by Malta standards.

Hilton Malta - PoolThe piña coladas at the pool bar are DEEEELICIOUS, by the way. My husband really enjoyed the (very manly) Mai Tais.   One of the pools even has a sandy “beach” next to it.

We were really glad that we sprang for the Executive level room so we were able to enjoy the breakfast, afternoon tea and hors d’oeuvres offered in the Executive Lounge. The food was always very good, and although it was usually the same with a few variations, we did not mind. I was impressed that alcohol was included, as it is not included in similar settings at other hotels (such as the Fairmont Southampton in Bermuda).

We had breakfast one day in the Oceana restaurant, but I think the one in the Executive Lounge was better as far as value (not 20 Euro per person) and fewer children running around.  The Oceana restaurant had a nice full English breakfast (a nod to the island’s heritage and to the hordes of Brits who flock here to escape the cool, cloudy climate of the British Isles), but the Executive Lounge breakfast always hit the spot – and allowed us to leave from for the delicious pastizzi in town.

One complaint that we had read again and again prior to arrival is that the in-room WiFi is not free. Free WiFi in the room would be an improvement, but we found that having it in the public areas was just fine. Since we weren’t traveling for business, it was really nice to leave our devices alone while in the room – it made it very relaxing!

Speaking of relaxing, the toiletries in the room were Peter Thomas Roth …which is such a nice touch. And the circular tub with curtains that you can open and see through the room to the ocean was a really neat feature.

I will review Blue Elephant (the high-end Thai restaurant with several global locations) separately, but it was so great that we ate there twice during our stay. I had been to the one in London (previously in Fulham) and I was so happy to see that it was very similar inside and the food was wonderful.

Speaking of food, we had wonderful restaurant recommendations from Claudio, Alastair and Jeanine at the front desk. We never had a bad meal!

Finally, the concierge, Edward, was a delight. We probably asked him about a thousand questions daily and he always had an answer for us, accompanied by a chuckle at times, a smile, and a spot-on recommendation. He is probably the one who is most responsible for us having a blast outside of the hotel during our stay. His handy must-see list was our bible – as well as his input when we were having trouble choosing between two options. He never steered us wrong and really was so pleasant and helpful, yet professional and so knowledgeable. It’s apparent why he does what he does!

I could write a(nother) novel about our stay but I think the above really captures how much we loved this hotel and its staff. They really made our honeymoon special, and they were the only hotel of all the ones we stayed in during our trip who really went that extra mile to do so.

I cannot recommend the Hilton Malta enough. Its convenient location, high quality service, delicious food and beautiful pool area make for a relaxing, pampered stay just steps away from the best nightlife on the island. Absolutely, 100% worth the splurge. Now all I need to do is go back again…

    great post, jackie!
i wonder what restaurants the hotel concierge recommended and what were your favourite dishes… did you eat “maltese” food (or international)?

Great questions! I JUST posted my first restaurant review of a place in Malta – the best recommendation that we got for traditional, more rustic Maltese cuisine. Check it out HERE. Thank you!
