Experiencing the Quebec City Toboggan Run

What’s it like to go down the famous toboggan run in Quebec City (Toboggan Slide au 1884), just beside the Château Frontenac at the Terrasse Dufferin? Well, see for yourself!

We captured this video with our GoPro Hero4 Session and a handy-dandy chest strap, which Luke wore as the front rider in our run.

It was exhilarating, to say the least! The queue wasn’t even that long, although there definitely was a queue. We went on Christmas day, and waited for about 15 minutes. As you can see, three toboggans go at a time, and there seem to be about 9 in all.

Buy a ticket from the little kiosk called Au 1884 at the base of the slide on the Dufferin Terrace, which also sells coffee, pastries and other refreshments. A pack of four tickets (one ticket per person is required) costs $10 CAD and they’re laminated so you can use them later in your trip if you don’t want to go twice in a row (or even twice in one day). It’s a better deal than $3 CAD per person, so if you think you’ll want to go again (you will), it’s better to get the 4-pack.

Coincidentally, it’s called Au 1884 because the slide was first opened in…1884. Kind of mind blowing, isn’t it? As you walk up the slanted wooden side, you get the feeling that this is an old structure. But, don’t worry, there are slats and grips along the way, like on a ship’s gangway, and handrails at the sides, so you won’t slip. You loop the string for the toboggan around your waist while you climb, so you’re hands-free.

The toboggan run is located just behind the Fairmont Le Chateau Frontenac

Whizzing downhill at speeds of up to 40mph is enough to make you feel like a kid again!  Don’t you think? And once it’s all over and your face is chilly from being windblown in low temperatures, you can take a very short walk over to the shop to get a hot chocolate to warm up again.
